How to apply for a short-stay Schengen Visa for the Netherlands?

The short-stay Schengen Visa allows you to travel within the Netherlands and other member states of the Schengen zone. The visa allows you to stay in these countries for up to 90 days within a six month period.

Where to apply for a short-stay Schengen Visa for the Netherlands?

You can apply for a short-stay Schengen Visa for the Netherlands by logging on to www.netherlandsandyou.nl. The procedure varies from country to country. You may be able to apply for a Schengen Visa for the Netherlands at your nearby Dutch Embassy or Consulate.

Travelling on a short-stay Schengen Visa

You may stay for up to 90 days in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries on a short-stay Schengen Visa. You are allowed a maximum stay of 90 days in a 180-day period. The validity of the Schengen Visa would be for a specific period. In some cases, the validity may be less than 90 days.

Emergency Visa for the Netherlands in the case of illness or death

A family member living in the Netherlands, in the event of an “emergency”, can apply for an Emergency Visa for you. An “emergency” could be a terminal illness or death of a family member. However, the discretion to grant an Emergency Visa is on the Immigration and Naturalization Services.

It is important to note that Emergency Visas are granted for a shorter duration, but they are not short-stay Schengen Visas. You can only travel to the Netherlands on an Emergency Visa.

Which countries do not need a Visa to travel to the Netherlands?

If you hold a passport for any of these countries, you may not need a visa for the Netherlands:

  • Denmark (excluding Greenland& the Faroe Isles)
  • Germany
  • Finland
  • Estonia
  • Belgium
  • France (excluding Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Mayotte, Martinique and La Reunion)
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Norway (excluding Spitsbergen)
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira)
  • Slovenia
  • Slovakia
  • Spain (including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands)
  • Czech Republic
  • Iceland
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
