Germany

Germany has introduced a new Visa for enthusiasts of Esports which will most probably be implemented by March 2020. The new Esports Visa will be granted to professional Esports players and coaches who are not citizens of member states of the European Union.

The new Visa is a part of the Skilled Immigration Act. It aims to expand the current infrastructure to include non-EU professionals who want to work in Germany. Esports players and coaches will be able to get a long-term visa to live and compete in Germany. Earlier, esports players were only allowed a maximum stay of 90 days.

For those who are wondering what Esports is- it is a form of sport competition that involves video games. Esports usually involve multiplayer video games played by professional players or teams.

Germany has been fast emerging as a hotspot for esports in the past few years. Berlin houses international leagues like the League of Legends European Championship. Other German cities like Cologne and Leipzig hosts other esports titles like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The new Visa will be beneficial to players participating in leagues like the LEC, which takes place over many months in a year.

Germany is home to other long-term esports leagues like ESL Meisterschaft League and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Europe League.

The requirements for the new Esports Visa in Germany are:

  • An applicant should be a minimum of 16 years old
  • The applicant should meet the salary requirement
  • The applicant should have confirmation of their professional activity from an organization responsible for esports
