Portugal Study Visas to be eased for overseas students

Portugal Study Visa framework will be simplified for overseas students who intend to enrol in higher education in the country. This is through facilitated access as announced by order in the official gazette.

The order defines the simplification of the process for offering Portugal Study Visas for overseas students. It becomes effective from 11 May 2019, as quoted by the Portugal News.

The initiative is one of the measures of the program "Simplex+". It aims to fast-track Visas for overseas students in Portugal. A commission will be created for accompanying and monitoring the order.  It will have representatives from the following Ministries in Portugal:

•    Science, Technology and Higher education

•    Internal administration

•    Foreign affairs

The number of overseas students in Portugal has increased by more than twice in the last 10 years. Currently, 50,000 of them represent 13% of the total students in higher education in the nation.

Non-EU nationals will require a Portugal Study Visa if they intend to study in the nation for more than 3 months. They will also need a Residence Permit. The Study Visa has to be received from the Consulate or Embassy of Portugal in their home nation prior to arriving at Portugal.

The Residence Permit must be obtained after arrival in Portugal. This is from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service.

Non-EU citizens must apply for the Short-stay Type C Visa in their home nation before arrival to Portugal. This is if they intend to study in the nation for academic research for less than 90 days or in a short course.

You will require the long-term Portugal Study Visa (Schengen Visa D type) if you are a non-EU citizen and your studies will last for more than 3 months. You can subsequently obtain the Residence Permit after arrival in Portugal.
