• Around 1.8 million tourists have stayed in arranged accommodations during the last month in Portugal.
• Portugal’s tourism division represented around 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) before the pandemic. Yet, the total number of international visitors in the last seven months of this year was 8.1 million.
• Portugal has welcomed the largest share of total tourists from Spain 285,900, followed by the United Kingdom, and the United States.
• Tourism surged to become one of the main sources of tourism for Portugal.
• Around 183,215 tourists from the United States have been welcomed to Portugal. This is considered a record-level number of arrivals.
• The United States is expected to be one of the main sources of origin of tourists for a maximum number of EU countries like France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Record number of Tourists in Portugal

Almost 1.8 million tourists were staying in the accommodation spots for tourists in Portugal during July, which is moderately higher than the pre-COVID levels.

Based on the statistics provided by National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of tourists visited in July is 600,000 which is more than in 2021 due to the travel restrictions and limitations during the pandemic.

During July month of 2019, around 1.78 million arrivals were recorded, which was a record year for Portugal tourism. In the same period, the tourism sector of Portugal contributed almost 15% of the GDP, this broke out in 2020, due to the pandemic.

Around 8.1 million foreign visitors visited Portugal in the first seven months of 2022, which is a million short of the same during the pre-pandemic time.

Almost 285,900 tourists from Spain visited Portugal in July, which represents the largest share of total arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom, and the United States. With these numbers, tourism plays a major source of income for Portugal.

Ukraine’s war did not affect tourism as it is located in European’s southern region, hence tourists consider it a safe place. Apart from many other European countries, Portugal also faces challenges to staffing shortages and high inflation.

Based on National Statistics Institute (INE), Portugal welcomed 83,215 tourists from the United States to Portugal, this number is considered the record number of arrivals from the US till now to the country.

In the month of July, 181,869 Americans visited Portugal. This was the highest number from 2013, and the record broke when 183,215 American nationals arrived in Portugal in July.

Some Portuguese citizens consider the United States as one of the main sources of tourists for some of the European Union (EU) countries like the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and France.

The American companies that are located in Portugal stated the United States is considered the fifth most important source of tourism revenue, which represents 7% in total.
