Overseas students now have 2 new ways to get Canadian PR

Manitoba in Canada has announced 2 new pathways to Permanent Residency for overseas students.

The International Education Stream was created a year ago, as part of the Manitoba PNP renewal program.  Two new pathways have been created under this stream:

• The International Student Entrepreneur Pathway
• Graduate Internship Pathway

Manitoba can nominate a set number of migrants for PR through its PNP every year. The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program was started in 1998. It has welcomed 130,000 immigrants to the province since its start.

The International Student Entrepreneur Pathway

This is for international graduates who wish to own and operate a business in Manitoba. Overseas students who have completed at least a 2-year program at a post-secondary institution in Manitoba may apply under this stream. Applicants would need to invest as well as actively manage the business in the province.

Selected candidates will receive a temporary work permit under this stream.

Graduate Internship Pathway

This stream is for students who have completed a PhD or a Masters from a University in the province. They should have completed the course in the recent 3 years. They should also be eligible for an internship.

Applicants who complete an Elevate or Accelerate internship through Mitacs can apply under this stream. They may apply with or without an offer of employment.

Mitacs is a non-profit organization. It connects Universities and industries with eligible industry and research entities in Manitoba both in Canada and internationally.

CIC News quoted Kevin Goertzen as saying that these 2 new pathways are designed to attract and retain talented entrepreneurs and innovators from across the globe. Mr. Goertzen is the Minister of Education and Training of Manitoba.

International students bring novel ideas, global connections, and entrepreneurial essence to the province. When such students create opportunities for themselves, it makes Manitoba more innovative as well as competitive, added Mr. Goertzen.

The Govt. hopes that since overseas students now have 2 new ways to get Canadian PR, it will help attract more students to the province.
