Ontario will launch new immigration streams for Tech workers

Ontario has announced that it will launch new immigration streams for Tech workers and for smaller communities in the province. This will be through the OINP - Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. These initiatives are a part of the several programs included in its latest provincial budget.

The initiatives announced by Ontario in its 2019 Budget include:

•    A Pilot program aimed at bringing skilled immigrant workers to smaller communities in the province

•    Expansion of the existing Entrepreneur Stream in OINP

•    Addition of 2 new occupations to In-Demand Skills Stream: Employer Job Offer - Personal Support Workers and Truck Drivers

The statement in the Budget said that along with other initiatives, the OINP will be modernized. Through this, it will be ensured by the Government that the workforce in Ontario remains amongst the highly skilled for the current economy.

The Budget statement further calls upon the Canadian Federal Government to work in collaboration with the province. This is to ensure that NOC codes and nomination allocation for OINP are fair. The province must also be permitted to cater to its unique economic needs and evolving labour market, it adds.

New Stream for Technology Sector

The Government of Ontario has said that a dedicated stream will be created for assisting the technology sector in the province to attract highly skilled immigrants. The new stream for the Technology Sector is in response to the expanding IT industry in the province. It is centred on Toronto considered as North America’s fastest growing tech market, as quoted by the CIC News.

The Tech Stream for skilled workers follows the successful Global Talent Stream by the Federal Government for tech workers.

New Immigration Pilot for Smaller Communities

Ontario has said that the Government will launch a pilot initiative with select communities to spread the benefits of immigration to smaller communities. This is for exploring innovative approaches for bringing highly skilled migrants to them.
