On October 19, 2020, Norway has come out with new passports that are being claimed to be much more secure and difficult to forge. The first new passports of Norway were issued – on Monday, October 19 at the passport office in Ski – to the Minister of Justice and Public Security Monica Mæland and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.
Earlier, the government of Norway had announced that it intended spending much more on citizenship processing in 2021.
The new Norwegian passports can be applied for by the citizens of Norway at all passport and ID offices in Norway.
The new passports have been launched following several delays in the past.
However, even though the new documents are available, those with a valid Norwegian passport will not be required to apply for getting the new passport of Norway.
Current passports of Norway will remain valid until the date of their expiry.
While one has to be a citizen of Norway in order to be granted a Norwegian passport, one does not get a Norwegian passport automatically by taking up the citizenship of the country. An application for a Norwegian passport will be required to be made by the individual.
Prior to applying for a Norwegian passport, the applicant must have a personal identity number, issued to them by the Norwegian Tax Administration.
Those living in Norway can submit their application for a Norwegian passport to the police. Those living overseas, on the other hand, will be required to apply for a Norwegian passport at a Norwegian Embassy or Consulate that is nearest to them.
With enhanced security elements and a new design, the new passport of Norway has been designed by Neue Design Studio that won the contract.
The 2-step design competition for designing the new passports of Norway was aimed at a unique concept with a theme that was widely recognizable as well as a functional design of high quality.
By using illustrations of a wide Norwegian panorama, Neue Design Studio has shown the contrasts in landscapes and climates that make Norway.
When placed under UV light, the pages of the new passport will reveal a change in the reproduction of the Norwegian landscape. With beautiful clouds and northern lights, the landscape will transition from day to night under UV light.
The new design provides an increased security concerning Norwegian passports, travel documents as well as travel documents. At the same time, the landscape succeeds in creating a sense of belonging and connection across regions, gender, and age in Norway.
