No visa for the US if you can’t pay for healthcare

The Trump Govt. says that they will not admit immigrants who can’t pay for healthcare. The new policy has been hugely criticized and may lead to separating families.

New immigrants to the US will now need to show that they will be covered by healthcare within 30 days of coming to the US. If not, they will need to show that they have sufficient funds to pay their medical expenses in the US. Those who cannot show either will not be given US visas said President Donald Trump.

As per the proclamation issued by President Trump, the US will reject those who will be a financial burden to the country’s healthcare system.

The new rule will come into effect from 3rd November. The rule also highlights President Trump tough stance on immigration. Immigration was key to his election campaign in 2016 and continues to remain so as he heads towards the 2020 elections.

The US had earlier announced that it will not grant visas to immigrants who avail public assistance like food stamps or subsidized housing. These new rules are aimed at weeding out immigrants who do not fulfil the income criteria of the Trump Govt.

Julian Castro of the Democratic Party says that such rules of the Trump Govt. are cruel attacks on migrants and aimed to instil fear. The new rule makes it compulsory for all immigrants to have health insurance. The Trump Govt. has overturned the Obama-era rule that mandates health coverage for all Americans.

New York Democrat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calls the move hypocritical, xenophobic and barbaric, as quoted by Bloomberg.

President Trump claimed in his proclamation that the service costs of public hospitals in the US have been more than $35 billion per year for the last 10 years. Immigrants in the US are much more like to not be insured as compared to American citizens.
