New York City tops with the most number of H1Bs

The H1B Visa Program of the US brings nearly 85,000 skilled workers yearly into the country. This visa is usually used to fill up positions which cannot be filled by employers locally.

However, it is not easy to get an H1B Visa. The visa recipient needs to have a University degree and several years of relevant experience. Most H1B Visas are issued to IT workers and medical professionals. The visa is considered to be a non-immigrant visa as the workers are in the US only for a specific amount of time. Hence, H1B Visa holders are not considered permanent residents of the US.

New York City topped the list with the most number of H1B workers. New York City is the most populated US city and has nearly 70,000 H1B Visa holders.

Second, on the list is San Jose. San Jose is home to more than 42,000 H1B Visa holders.

San Francisco with its thriving IT market comes third on the list. More than 39,000 H1B Visa holders call San Francisco home.

India is the biggest source country for H1B Visas in the US. Nearly 75% of all the H1B Visas are issued to Indians.

However, in recent years the rejection rate of H1B Visas have spiked. This is a huge cause of concern for employers and applicants alike. As per Forbes, the H1B rejection rates have gone up by 32% since 2015.
