In a new announcement by Rajnath Singh, Indian Home Minister, Indian citizens who married foreign nationals can now have their spouse’s tourist visas converted to X2 dependent Visa. The changes can be done without them having to leave the country.
Mr. Singh tweeted last month that the Home Ministry had received directions for amendment of the Visa rules so that the process can be streamlined. This Visa reform will facilitate the conversion of the spouse’s tourist Visa to X2 Visa even if the marriage takes place outside of India, as per the Times of Oman.
The Visa reform came to be introduced after the complaint of an Indian citizen about his spouse from the Philippines. The Indian national married his Filipino spouse outside India. They faced many difficulties in converting the Tourist Visa to X2 Dependent Visa as the then Visa rules did not permit the same. The earlier rules required the spouse to leave Indian and re-enter using a new Visa.
Talking about the Filipino case, Mr. Singh said that as per the earlier rules, the tourist Visa could only be converted to X2 Visa provided the marriage took place in India. The earlier rules required the marriage to be registered in India within the validity of the existing tourist Visa. Hence the spouse was required to leave Indian soil and re-enter with an X2 Visa.
The new Visa rules were implemented after Mr. Singh received a complaint from the Indian husband.
