Three Stages of Skilled Worker Immigration Law

The second stage of the Skilled Worker Immigration Law came into force on March 1, 2024, and this opened the way for many skilled foreign workers to work and settle in the country.

The first stage was introduced on November 2023, which was beneficial for the “EU Blue Card” and for recognised skilled workers; the new stage has made many changes, which makes it possible for foreigners to come to Germany for work with two years of professional experience and a university degree.

The third stage of the Immigration law will come into effect months later this year, on June 1, 2024. Some reports say that this stage will introduce the job search opportunity card for foreigners.

Foreigners Eligible to Work with 2 Years of Experience & a Degree

The new law will enable foreigners with two or more years of experience in their field and a professional degree to move to Germany and get employed in that field. They should also meet the salary threshold. This change intends to create easy procedures by eliminating several hurdles.

At the same time, foreign skilled workers will be eligible to send their parents to Germany. They will no longer have to provide proof of sufficient living space when bringing their spouse and children over.

Other benefits of new immigration law

  1. Easier Labour Market Access for Care Sector Workers

The demand for healthcare professionals is high in Germany, and the country will need around 150,000 additional nursing staff by 2025. Therefore, the country has introduced many strategies and agreements to attract this essential staff, particularly from Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

  1. Making It Easier for Students to Get Employed

Students will also benefit from the second stage, Skilled Worker Immigration Law. Students are now allowed to do part-time jobs. They will also be given more time to complete professional qualifications.

The annual working time will be increased to 140 full days or 280 half days from 120 full days or 240 half days. Students will be able to work for up to 20 hours per week.

  1. 25,000 Foreign Workers to Be Hired for Short-Term Employment in 2024

The new changes in the skilled migration law will allow employers to hire 25,000 foreign workers in 2024. Foreigners can now work for up to eight months in Germany under such an arrangement.
