The technology sector in Alberta has been facing challenges in terms of access to skilled workers.
With the announcement of the new immigration pathways, Alberta government seeks to address this talent gap. Along with encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit of the newcomers to Alberta, they will also be provided assistance for growing companies that will in turn diversify the economy in Alberta.

As per the News Release, from October 26, 2020, “recent international graduates from Alberta’s universities and colleges can apply to the new International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream to launch business ventures and startups in Alberta”.
The Foreign Graduate Start-up Visa Stream, on the other hand, will be launched in January 2021. As per the AINP, “In January 2021, students graduating from a post-secondary program outside of Canada can apply to start a business in Alberta and stay permanently.”
As per Jason Copping, Minister of Labour and Immigration, these actions by the Alberta government will help in strengthening the provincial economy, by allowing Alberta to “take advantage of untapped talent by making it easier for international graduates to put their ideas to work here in Alberta.”
Taken together, the new immigration pathways of the AINP will provide new tools for growing the tech sector in Alberta, by attracting new investments in the province that will lead to the creation of new high-paying jobs.
Alberta offers a more favourable environment for start-ups. According to Alberta’s Recovery Plan, “When companies move to Alberta to they have more money to grow their business. Workers also enjoy a lower cost of living and pay lower personal taxes.”
