London Mayor has asked for a 2-year Post-study work visa for overseas students from the UK government and removal of the existing thresholds on visas for non-EU professionals. He suggested these and other reforms for accepting qualified freedom of movement to safeguard the prosperity of UK economy amidst Brexit.
Sadiq Khan cautioned that the current approach of the UK government was based on short-term politics over economic stability of the nation. He said that it was high time to stand for freedom of movement and advantages that it incurred to the economy, as quoted by The Hindu.
It cannot be denied that secure borders and well managed robust immigration system are required said, Mr. Khan. But it is also necessary to have a simpler and easier system for immigration and not a tough one. This will ensure that talents across the world arrive at the UK who will facilitate the economy to thrive. They will also create more opportunities, jobs and wealth, added the London Mayor.
The proposal for the 2-year Post-study work visa for overseas students was a part of the immigration proposals released by the London Mayor on 11, October. Its applicability is for the entire UK and includes the guarantee for EU citizens currently in the UK. The proposals also demand to eliminate overseas students from the net immigration figures of the UK and to have the dynamic approach for overseas talents.
While demanding the 2-year Post-study work visa for overseas students Sadiq Khan added that the existing visa system in the UK for non-EU students was not planned with the current Brexit scenario. He added that the government must enhance opportunities for skills and talents outside the EU rather than restricting skilled immigration.
