Subclass 491 of Australia

The Minister of Immigration, Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs Mr David Coleman has released new legislation regarding the pool and minimum score. Australia will introduce a new points system from 16th November 2019.

The good news is that the minimum score for all the below subclasses would still be 65 points.

  • Subclass 189 Visa (Skilled Independent)
  • Subclass 190 Visa (Skilled Nominated)
  • Subclass 491 Visa (Skilled Work Regional (Provisional))

The new Subclass 491 Visa will become effective from 16th November 2019.

Here are the key highlights regarding the new Subclass 491 Visa:

  • The Subclass 491 Visa will have a validity of 5 years
  • Subclass 491 visa holders must complete a mandatory stay of 3 years in a designated regional area. They also should have 3 years of work experience in the recent 5 years.
  • Subclass 491 visa holders can shuffle between any regional areas in any state.
  • Subclass 491 visa holders are restricted from living and working in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. They will be allowed to live and work elsewhere.
  • After completing 3 years of work and stay in a designated regional area, Subclass 491 visa holders may apply for Australian Permanent Residence. They can apply for the Subclass 191 (Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional)) Visa. However, it is mandatory for the primary applicant to meet the minimum income threshold for 3 years.
  • Subclass 491 visa holders cannot apply for any other visa subclass for the initial 3 years. This includes Subclass 189, 190, 186, 124, 858, 132, 188 or 820 Partner (Temporary) Visa.
  • Subclass 491 visa holders will be allowed to enrol in Medicare
  • There will be 25,000 visa places available for the Subclass 491 Visa
  • Visa aspirants can also apply to ACT (Australian Capital Territory) for nomination
  • Visa applicants who are sponsored by a state/territory/eligible relative will earn 15 extra points
