Irish work permits: 2023

  • Ireland has issued 18,000+ work permits in the first half of 2023.
  • Indians received 6,868 employment permits in different industries.
  • Employment permits were issued majorly in the following sectors:
    • Health and social work activities
    • Information and communication activities
    • Accommodation and food services activity
    • Financial and insurance activities
    • Agriculture
    • Forestry and fishing

What is Atypical Working Scheme?

  • Atypical Working Scheme or AWS is an Irish scheme for foreign Non-EEA nationals to work in Ireland temporarily.
  • Highly skilled and specialized candidates can seek legal, short-term contract-based employment via the Atypical Working scheme.
  • The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) and the Employment Permits Section of the Department of Business, Enterprise, and Innovation are responsible for reviewing the Atypical scheme applications.

Atypical Working Scheme: Latest revisions

The Department of Justice introduced and implemented changes to the Atypical Working Scheme, starting from the 1st of January, 2023.

The key revisions made to this scheme are as follows:

  1. Increase in Salary threshold:
  • The current National Minimum Wage of €11.30 per hour (as of January 2023) has been increased to meet the standards of the General Employment Permit.
  • Employers wishing to hire workers must pay a minimum salary of over €30,000.
  1. Reduced waiting time:
  • Permission via the Atypical Working Scheme has been granted for 90 days.
  • Individuals can travel to and from Ireland for a maximum of 90 days over six months.
  1. Reduced permission time:
  • The time taken to get permission to apply for a new AWS has been revised to 1 month from a 12-month timeframe.
  • Major changes have also been announced to the Atypical Working Scheme.
  • The salary threshold of the Atypical working scheme has been increased to €30,000.
