Salaries to Tech Professionals

When it comes to salaries for tech workers some industries pay more than the others. You might be wondering why there is a disparity in pay when the qualifications and experience of the employees are almost similar.  There are various reasons for this, some industries like finance or biotechnology can afford to invest more in paying their employees while other sectors such as a school district may have to grapple with budget issues when paying their tech workers.

Based on the Dice Salary Survey, here is a list of the top 5 industries that pay over $100,000 for tech workers per year:

Industry Salary
Aerospace and Defense $109,698
Bank/Financial/Insurance $105,170
Computer Software $102,739
Entertainment Media $103,608
Medical/Pharmaceutical $100,539

Sectors such as government, telecommunications, e-commerce, manufacturing pay around $80,000 per year.  According to the survey, the annual salary ranges between $80,000 and $90,000 in the following industries:

Industry Salary
Telecommunications $97,702
Retail/E-Commerce $80,580
Professional Services $99,466
Marketing/Advertising $80,320
Manufacturing $91,634
These industries pay under $80,000 per year:
Industry Salary
Transportation/Logistics $78,162
Non-Profit $71,911
Hospitality/Travel $73,859
Education $68,586
Distributor/Wholesale $76,716

According to the survey, there is also a discrepancy among sectors on the year-over-year increase in salaries. High-paying sectors such as aerospace or energy have seen a significant year-over-year increase in salary. But sectors that pay below $80,000 show significant year-over-year decline.

While exploring the reasons for such disparities, the survey infers that this may be due to salaries leveling off for tech professionals between 2017 and 2018. Industries are willing to pay only a certain amount to tech professionals even if they are responsible for critical functions.

How does this information help recruiters and training managers? Knowledge about the salary limits in each industry will help recruiters make the right offer to tech professionals and hire the best with the requisite skills and experience.
