Dinesh Patnaik, the Deputy High Commissioner in London has said that though the Sikh community in the UK might have several differences with their mainland, they must unite to crusade for a number of core issues such as immigration and trade. These issues influence Indians universally and it will be a great thing if we can come together to give e united stand, said the Deputy High Commissioner of India in London. He added that it was this disunity that was responsible for Sikhs being unable to reap the benefits of being a large community in the UK, as quoted by The Hindu.
Dinesh Patnaik was speaking on the occasion of Baisakhi celebrations being planned by the Indian High Commission in the UK to commemorate the 350th birth centenary of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.
Though celebrations to mark Baisakhi are usual phenomena in Britain, this particular event had an estimated attendance of 18,000 people uniting thirteen Gurudwaras and community associations from across the London city. The event also marked a crucial transformation in the relations between the Sikh community in the UK and India.
The UK has a strong community of Sikhs with a population of 4, 32,000 that constitutes 0.7% of the total British population according to the latest survey of the population in the UK. The survey also cautioned that the Sikh community was being ignored by politicians and decision makers in spite of the strong presence in the UK.
Surinderjit Mahal Inspector of the Metropolitan Police said that uniting diverse communities is a very crucial thing as this will facilitate to cater to confidence issues and misconceptions that a section of the people has regarding certain jobs. He also added that the community will be able to accentuate numbers in diverse professions and convey the message that there are individuals who are prepared to address the concerns. The celebrations witnessed participation by the Army as well as the Metropolitan Police.
