Indians who seek study abroad may have to soon enrol with the Government prior to departing to their selected destination. The proposal is under the 2019 Emigration Bill draft that will be placed before the Parliament by the External Affairs Ministry. This is once it completes taking feedback that has been sought from the public.
Officials familiar with the issue said that the registration process is unlikely to be burdensome. This is because it will be done online, they added.
The bill will make registration compulsory for all streams of Indian citizens heading overseas. It includes those immigrating for Overseas Job and students who intend to Study Abroad, as quoted by the Times of India.
The process of registration is proposed to be on an online platform. This is to make immigration an efficient, swift and hassle-free process. It is so as to not to cause any inconvenience to the Indians seeking Overseas Jobs or Education, says the draft bill. Also, required provisions have been made for exempting some categories in this context on the basis of need.
Earlier, the Government had made it mandatory for Indians to register who seek to Work Overseas in 18 nations. These include Yemen, Thailand, Syria, South Sudan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Malaysia, Libya, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Indonesia, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and UAE.
The Indian officials have said that the process of registration will not be tedious. It is only intended at safeguarding the interests of the Indian citizens, they said. The bill is yet to be finalized. Several modifications can be made based on feedback from the public, they added.
