India tops in Tech Visa applications for the UK

India and the USA are the countries which make the highest number of visa applications to the Tech sector in the UK. This has been revealed by recent data from the UK’s leading network for digital technology entrepreneurs.

Tech Nation, a designated body for Technology Visas for the UK Home Office has found that Indian applications covered a wide variety of sectors. There has been a 45% in the number of applications for the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa increasing from 450 in 2017-18 to 650 in 2018-19.

China, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Russia and Nigeria are other countries which have a high number of applications.

Tech Nation is one of the five DCB (Designated Competent Bodies) appointed by the Home Office for the Exceptional Talent Visa. Tech Nation is responsible for endorsing eligible applicants through the digital technology track. Half of almost all the Exceptional Talent Visa applications go to Tech Nation, as quoted by The Times of India.

Margot James, Minister for Digital & Creative Industries, says that the UK attracts talented individuals from across the globe. This is due to renowned academic institutions, easy access to finances and the UK’s reputation for innovation. Ensuring that the UK has the talent and skills for the tech sector to continue growing is the Govt’s priority under the modern Industrial Strategy.

Each of the 5 DCBs is allocated 200 endorsement places every financial year. There are 1,000 endorsement places in the contingency pool in case an exceptional number of applications are received.

Due to the extraordinary quality of the applicants in the year 2018-19, Tech Nation had to endorse almost half of all the applications it had received. It, thereby, exceeded its allocated quota by roughly 63%.

Starting September this year, Tech Nation will begin endorsing applications for tech entrepreneurs for the new Startup & Innovator Visa routes.
