The largest immigrant group in Australia’s Victoria state is Indians for the first time ever, according to the national census of Australia.
It was also revealed that 12 years of robust growth had seen migration from India to this state overtaking England for the very first time.
Harish Budhiraja, an Indian immigrant, who moved to Victoria twelve years ago, said that Indians find Victoria very accommodating and multicultural as well.
When Budhiraja relocated, more migrants from countries including England, Italy, New Zealand and Vietnam were found in Victoria than Indians.
For South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania, however, England continues to be the largest source of migrants. On the other hand, for New South Wales and Queensland, the biggest source groups of migrants are China and New Zealand, respectively.
Xinhua cites News Limited quoting Budhiraja as saying on 11 April that people are of the belief that Australia was struggling in the industrial sector, but he felt that it was doing much better than most economies.
According to him, for Indians, Australia continues to be the land of opportunities with regard to research, education and the quality of life.
He said he headed to Australia as it provides chartered accountants an opportunity to get permanent residency and Melbourne, its capital, offers better career prospects.
He said that he had not experienced any racism during his stay there.
