India makes registration mandatory for expats in 18 countries

Indian expats working in UAE and 17 other countries will now need to register online. From 1^st January 2019, registration will be mandatory for these expats. Ones who do not register online will not be allowed to travel abroad.

India has made registration mandatory for all Indians holding ECNR (Non-emigration clearance required) passports. Such expats who have employment visas in 18 notified countries will need to register online when they visit India.

M.C. Luther clarified that a one-time registration will be required for expats. Mr Luther is the Joint Secretary for overseas employment.  However, the registration is applicable only till the time they have an employment visa with the same company. If there is a visa change, expats will need to re-do the registration.

The registration can be done on the Indian emigrate portal. The registration should be completed between 24 hours and 21 days prior to the travel date. The ones who fail to do so will not be allowed to board flights to their countries of work, as per MEA.

ECR passport holders who convert their passport status to ECNR after 3 years of working abroad will also need to register themselves.

Mr Luther said that online registration will help maintain contact details of all the employers abroad. This will make reaching them easier in times of emergency.

The registration process, however, will not be used to track fraudulent job offers. To complain against the same, workers will need to use the existing grievance-redressal process.

40,000 ECNR passport holders have already completed the registration process, as per Gulf News.
