EU migrants need to earn at least £23,000 to work in the UK

The UK is all set to introduce a points-based immigration system by the end of the year. The new immigration system also aims to reduce the number of low-skilled immigrants entering the UK.

The new Australia-style points-based immigration system may awards points for skills, occupations or salaries. Immigrants may need to meet specific points criteria to apply for immigration to the UK.

Most low-skilled immigrants in the UK come from the EU due to freedom of movement. However, post-Brexit, the UK no longer has that provision.

Migrants from the EU would still be able to work in the UK. However, they would need to earn at least £23,000 to work in the UK. The low salary may not earn them enough points on the points grid. Hence, they will need to make up for the points in other areas to qualify for a UK Visa.

The UK will also put a salary threshold for high-earning immigrants as well. This will help ensure that wages are not cut for those who are already working in the UK. For instance, Pilots would need to have a salary of a minimum of £60,000 to work in the UK.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that there would be no concessions for sectors that are struggling with a labour shortage. The UK would only allow skilled migrants despite some industries facing a workforce shortage.

Priti Patel, Home Secretary, may divulge more details about the points-based immigration system next week. She said that applicants working in shortage occupations like construction or social care might be given additional points. However, there is no guarantee that such people would be able to enter the UK unless they meet all the eligibility criteria.

The new immigration system would be simple and will not differentiate between countries, said a spokesperson for the British PM. He also said that the UK wants to welcome the best and the brightest talent from across the world. The new system would put an end to the entry of cheap, low-skilled foreign workers.

The Migration Advisory Committee, however, has a critical view of the new immigration system. MAC has said that the new system could hinder economic growth and may not have any positive effect on creating new jobs in the UK.

In the meanwhile, aspiring immigrants need to wait and watch to see how the new immigration system unfolds.
