The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE has warned Indian housemaids against Visit Visa abuse. Such women, who bypassed Indian emigration laws often, ended up falling in trouble.

India has imposed a ban on the emigration of women under the age of 30. Eligible women may leave on an employment visa only applied through the eMigrate system. The system ensures the safety and welfare of such women.

Yet, more than 400 female household workers approached the Indian Embassy in the last 2 years. These women in distress were then sent back to India, as per The Gulf News.

Gulf News recently reported 4 Indian women who had approached the Indian Embassy for help. These women were brought to the UAE on Visit/Tourist Visa by fraudulent recruitment agencies and employers.

One of the women was from the state of Punjab. She was brought to Dubai on a month-long visit visa. She was kept at an agent’s office for many days without a job and was mentally and physically harassed. Another woman from Punjab also suffered a similar fate and so did 2 women from Telangana.

The Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Singh Suri said there has been an increase in such instances in the past 6 to 7 months. Most women were from Punjab and Telangana. The Embassy has written to the respective State Govt.’s to take necessary measures against unscrupulous recruitment agents.

Mr. Suri also said that many women are coming on Visit Visas with the hope of converting it to an Employment Visa. Such women are at the mercy of their sponsors and there have been many cases of abuse and maltreatment. The Embassy provides such women with emergency travel documents and tickets and sends them back to India.

He also said that the Central and State Govt. in India are taking strict action against these fraud recruitment agents. The UAE Govt. has also been very receptive at the concerns raised by the Indian Embassy. He is hopeful that with the help of the UAE Govt., a satisfactory resolution to this problem can be arrived at.
