  • Diwali celebration in the White House was hosted by US Prime Minister Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, the First Lady, on October 24, 2022.

The increasing Indian influence and presence of Indians in prominent positions in countries like the USA and the UK are grabbing the world’s attention. Notably, the appreciation of Indian culture, ethos, and tradition were reiterated during the occasion of the Diwali celebration in the White House in the USA. US President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, the First Lady, were hosts at a Diwali reception conducted in the White House on October 24, 2022. US Vice President Kamala Harris was present at the occasion along with over 200 Indian Americans. The guests came in traditional attire.

All you need to know about the grand reception

  • The reception was conducted in the East Room in the White House. It’s been a venue that has witnessed landmark events including the signing of the nuclear deal and the press conference jointly conducted by former US President Barack Obama and then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This happened in November 2008.
  • The cultural events on the occasion of Diwali celebration in the White House included the performance by sitarist Rishab Sharma and a show by the dance troupe “The Sa Dance Company”.
On the occasion, US President Joe Biden tweeted, “Diwali is a reminder that each of us has the power to dispel darkness and bring light to the world. It was my pleasure to celebrate this joyous occasion at the White House today,”
