The Canadian government’s decision to make Canada GTS permanent has been welcomed by the Council of Canadian Innovators. Global Talent Stream Pilot Program has been a ‘game-changer’ for high-growth Start-ups in Canada, added the CCI.

Canada GTS was launched in 2017 through the TFWP - Temporary Foreign Worker Program. It speeds up applications for Canada Work Visa by qualified overseas workers with skills needed by a Canadian employer. This is in fields such as Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, Science, and Information Technology.

The program permits employers to submit a facilitated LMIA - Labour Market Impact Assessment. It waives the requirement to demonstrate that they tried to first hire in Canada. It thus fast-tracks the process of approval as quoted by the CIC News.

The Work Visa can be received in as less as 10 business days if the LMIA finds that there are no workers available in Canada for doing the job. It thus permits faster access to crucial highly skilled workers.

The proposal to make Canada GTS permanent was declared in the federal budget for 2019. It follows demands to do so from business organizations including the CCI. The latter represents 100 plus fastest growing tech companies in Canada.

Executive Director of CCI Benjamin Bergen said that making Canada GTS permanent will help the tech leaders in Canada. This is in their constant efforts to access the talents needed to scale-up globally, he added.

Bergen said that the 2-week Work Visa processing times are a game-changer for firms in Canada looking to scale-up. This is to build a team of distinctively skilled workers with international experience, he said.

The CCI made a reference to the forecast by the Information and Communication Technology Council in Canada. It says that the tech sector in the nation will have 216,000 job openings by 2021.
