Canada’s employment landscape in December

In December 2023, Canada saw no changes in overall employment. Employment increased among men and women in the core age groups. Employment substantially increased in four provinces, with British Columbia leading the way. Professional, scientific, and technological services employed more people in December.

Employment increased for men and women in core age groups

In December 2023, Employment among men and women in core age group increased. 30.4% of women and 40.2% of males in this age range were employed.

Average hourly salaries increased year over year in Canada

Average hourly salaries increased by 5.4%, which is a total of $34.45. The total hours worked rose by 0.4%, contributing to a 1.7% year-over-year increase

Employment increased in certain sectors

Employment in the professional, scientific, and technical services increased by 46,000 (2.4%). This was the second monthly increase in the industry in 2023; the first was a 52,000 increase in August and an increase in 78,000 (4.2%) in December.

 

Employment in the health care and social support sectors increased by 16,000 (0.6%) and in the retail and wholesale sector increased to 108,000 (3.7%).

Number of people in Canada offering app-based ride or delivery services increased in 2023

App-based ride and delivery services increased in 2023, offering practical solutions for personal transport and cash generation.

 

The December 2023 Labour Force Survey supplement revealed a 48.1% increase in Canadians offering ride or taxi services via apps, which is a total of 135,000 individuals. Delivery services witnessed a 19.2% rise, with 272,000 Canadians engaging in this. Half (49.9%) of people who had offered delivery or personal transport lived in Toronto, Montréal, or Vancouver.
