IRCC’s new automation tool for IEC work permits

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a new automation tool on November 7, 2023 in order to speed up the process of International Experience Canada (IEC) work permit applications.

The goal of this new approach is to make immigration to Canada easier for young foreigners and to reduce waiting times.

IEC program allows young internationals from other countries to work in Canada. Young internationals from more than 30 nations are eligible to apply for an open work permit, which allows them to work in Canada for any employer.

In order to be eligible for IEC work permit, you must be from one of the below given countries:

IRCC’s take on the new tool

This new tool will process applications according to their complexness and the eligibility for approving routine application. This will boost efficiency for making decisions sooner for some applicants.

The majority of the work involved in processing applications and making decisions is handled by the triage feature of the IEC work permit.

The tool processes the applications by using parameters that have been designed by IRCC officials with expertise, based on the program's legislative and regulatory requirements.

Officers are then assigned with files for additional processing in accordance with their capabilities, and expertise, and will determine if the candidate is allowed to Canada.

*Want to work in Canada? Y-Axis is here to guide you.

IRCC’s dedication on utilizing technology

The tool has undergone an algorithmic impact assessment (AIA), which builds on Canada's Treasury Board Directive on Automated Decision Making.

The systems' effect level was rated as moderate by the AIA. Many precautions are also taken to reduce any risks. These precautions include an evaluation for any potential effects, tool's design for privacy and security, and the power for officers to cancel out tool’s decisions.
