British Columbia, Quebec and the Yukon hit hardest by Canada manpower shortages

Canada has a wide range of job vacancies for British Columbia, Quebec, and Yukon Territory, and few other north-western regions lack skilled workers.

Statistics of Canada's vacancy rate

Province/Territory Job vacancy rate
British Columbia 5.8
Quebec 5.6
Yukon 5.4

The Ottawa province job vacancy rate is calculated based on the number of open job positions on the last business day of that month divided by the total number of positions. The total number of the positions includes the job postings that are filled and open and then multiplied by 100 to get the result in terms of percentage.

 Labour shortage in Canada

  • Considering Canada's statistics, the labor shortage for many occupations worsens Canada for major provinces and territories. However, Canada has been performing very well at the immigration level during 2021.
  • To record the ratio of the number of unemployed people to each of the job vacancies in Canada, the statistical and demographic services agency records this number every month. Currently, the ratio is lower, and there is a vast requirement for candidates, to which Canada is inviting foreign nationals.
  • Last February, this ratio is recorded as the lowest of all time. During January month the ratio was 1.7 unemployed people for each job vacancy in Canada. This dropped more and was recorded as 1.4 unemployed people for each job vacancy.
  • In the British Columbia and Quebec provinces, the labor shortages are even greater than the ratios in Labelle and West Coast provinces.
  • The report published by Quebec thinks tank, which is an institute in Quebec, says that, currently, Quebec is facing more labor shortages now than compared by the end of the 2021 year.
  • According to the report on vacancies and salaries, when the Quebec think tank tried to fill in the labor shortage occupations, there were not enough people for the required skills for the job vacancies.

  • "For the tenth consecutive month, the job vacancy rate for food and accommodation sector was 9.8 percent during February 2022, which is the highest across all sectors".
  • Though there is an increase in the number of working people in the healthcare and social assistance sectors, that number is 6.2 percent for the February month, which is comparatively low compared to the other months of 2021 because there are still around 133,200 jobs are vacant.

TFWP and IMP programs to Canada

  • The two main programs Temporary Foreign Worker Program(TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP), enable Canadian employers to bring applicants from foreign to Canada to fill in the vacant jobs as there are no Canadian citizens or Permanent residents applicants.
  • Generally, Using the Global Talent Stream (GTS), a stream of Temporary Foreign worker programs will be able to obtain the Canadian work permit and visa application processing also in two weeks.
  • Employers try to bring in foreign nationals to fill the available job positions through the Express Entry system, which receives the maximum immigration applications online.
  • The foreign national applicants' online profile must meet the eligibility criteria known as Express of interest (EOI) under the three federal immigration programs or provincial immigration programs.
  • The applicant's profile is then ranked based on the points-based system called Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranked applicants will get an invitation for permanent residence. The applicant's complete application must be submitted and must pay the processing fee within 90 days.
