As per the National Immigration Forum’s Immigration Priorities for a Biden Administration, “America needs a 21st-century immigration system that advances the economic, security, and societal interests of all Americans. …. It must encourage legal immigration and its significant benefits to the American economy without harming the economic interests of those already here. A working immigration system can help unite our country through our common patriotism and American identity.”
Founded in 1982, the National Immigration Forum advocates for the value of immigration and immigrants to the US. The Forum promotes responsible federal immigration policies.
President-elect Biden is expected to make the improvement of the US immigration system “a sustained priority for the duration of his presidency”.
An overhaul of the US immigration system is much on the cards, so to speak.
An enduring immigration solution is one that while fixing an outdated visa system, boosts the economy, at the same time valuing the humanitarian programs of the country.
As per the official statistics with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services [USCIS] – US Lawful Permanent Residents: 2019 Annual Flow Report September 2020 – “just over 1 million persons became LPRs in 2019”.
Of these, a majority, that is, 56%, were already present in the US at the time of being granted their status of Lawful Permanent Resident [LPR], better known as the “Green Card”. Many were granted LPR status based on their relationship with either a US citizen or US green card holder. India was among the Top 3 countries of birth of new LPRs in 2019.
As the President, Biden will be expected to commit significant political capital for delivering legislative immigration reform, ensuring that the US “remains open and welcoming to people from every part of the world”.

President-elect Joe Biden also plans on increasing the H-1B limit, at the same time doing away with the per-country limit, or ‘cap’, of 7%.
Planning to reverse many of the recent immigration reforms, Biden has pledged to “support family-based immigration” and “restore and defend the naturalization process for green-card holders”.
