Genuine Student Requirement

According to the Migration Strategy released on 11 December 2023, Australia is replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) student visa requirement with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This plan was implemented on 23 March 2024. Applications submitted after 23 March will be assessed according to the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement.

 

Implementation of new GS requirement

After the Australian Government's discussion with education sector representatives, the new GS requirement was implemented. The new changes aim to identify international students genuinely intending to obtain quality education in Australia without migrating in the future.

 

The student visa application form with a 300-word statement will now be replaced with targeted questions. These targeted questions will provide an overview of the student to visa decision-makers. 

 

The targeted questions will cover:

 

• Complete details of their current conditions, including family, community, employment, and financial conditions.
• An explanation of their chosen course and their reasons for choosing Australia as a study destination.
• What benefits does the course provides.
• Details of their study history, such as if the applicants had a study history in Australia.
• If the applicant holds other visas, what are their reasons for applying for a student visa?

• Understand the purposes of studying in Australia.
• Understand and commit to student visa conditions and notify the Department of Home Affairs of any needed changes.
• Understand that while post-study pathways, applicants who cannot remain lawfully in Australia must depart Australia.
