Australia plans to increase immigration to tackle the skills crisis

Australia has planned to increase immigration and invite skilled workers to work in Australia. The announcement has been made by Brendan O'Connor, the minister for skills and training. He said that the new labor government has plans to raise the migration cap from 160,000. Applicants who can migrate to Australia to work will include health care workers, IT specialists, and others to deal with the labor shortage in the country.

Number of job vacancies available in Australia

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has stated that the number of job vacancies available in Australia was 480,100 in May 2022. This showed a 100 percent increase from February 2020. The new immigration cap will be announced in September and will be shared among the employers and trade unions at the government’s jobs and skills summit.

The minister has also announced that addressing the skills crisis is a major issue and the Labor government will train the local workforce to reduce the exploitation of the foreign workers. He also announced that there will be no relaxation in the selection standards. The shortages can be found in different industries like:

  • Manufacturing
  • Retail
  • Tourism
  • Tech industry
  • Healthcare

Increase in the migrant cap will be included in the federal budget and will be revealed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers in October.
