Digital SAT to launch in March 2023

‘Collegeboard’ has announced to make SAT or PSAT exam digital by March 2023. Currently, it is a pen-and-paper exam. SAT is an exam which is taken to test mathematical and language skills for applicants who want to pursue their undergraduate courses abroad. The verbal section tests the vocabulary while the math section tests the aptitude in the following topics:

  • Algebra
  • Data Analysis
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Complex Numbers

Changes made in the sections

Digital SAT will be launched in March 2023 in which many changes will be done. The names of the sections have been changed which are as follows:

  • Section 1 is named as reading and writing
  • Section 2 is named as Math

Both sections will measure the knowledge and skills of candidates which will include the following:

  • Reading passages
  • Writing passages

Verbal section previously has two sub-sections which are

  • Reading and writing
  • Language

Now there is only one section and that is Reading and writing. Passages will be short and they will consist of only one discrete question which is linked with one passage or a passage pair. There are four sections in which questions are divided and they are:

  • Craft & Structure
  • Information & Ideas
  • Standard English Conventions
  • Expression of Ideas

The range of topics in the quantities section has been expanded. Calculators will be allowed in the math section. The math section has been divided into the following sub-sections:

  • Algebra
  • Advanced Math

  • Trigonometry & Geometry

Duration of the test

The pen-and-paper SAT exam is of 3 hours and now it has been reduced to 2 hours and 14 minutes. The time allotted for each section can be found in the table below:

Section Time
Reading and Writing 64 minutes
Math 70 minutes

The test takers will get more average time to answer each question. It can be concluded that the digital SAT Suite will focus more on knowledge and skills rather than the speed of taking test.

Multisatge Adaptive Testing

The biggest change made to the test is multistage adaptive testing. Questions for the exam will be appropriate and will be according to the performance level of students. There will be two modules for the test and details can be found in the table below:

Modules Type of questions
1 Easy medium and hard questions
2 Targeted mix of questions with varying difficulty which will be given on the basis of performance in Module 1

Students will be able to navigate to the previous and upcoming questions.
