Schengen Visa applications filed in 2023

The number of Schengen Visa applications submitted worldwide increased to 10,327,572 in 2023, 36.3% more than in 2022. According to Schengen Visa Statistics, five Schengen countries received 7.2 million visa applications in 2023.

France continues to stay as the Number 1 Country for Schengen Visa Applications

France continues to be the number one country that receives the most Schengen visa applications worldwide. The Schengen Visa Statistics show that around 310,057 applications were filed from Morocco and 279,005 applications from Algeria. The top five countries that submitted applications to France were China with 271,111, India with 176,237, and Saudi Arabia with 145,096. In total, France received 2,625,846 visa applications in 2023.

 

Germany Back to the 2nd Position

In 2022, Germany fell to third place and was replaced by Spain. Dion Pllana from SchengenVisaInfo explained that this was due to the visa restrictions Germany imposed on Russian citizens.

 

However, in 2023, Germany returned to second place with 1,459,560 visa applications. The top five countries from which Germany received applications are Türkiye with 253,462, China with 160,479, India with 132,825, Belarus with 52,301, and Egypt with 46,991.

Spain and Italy received 2.5 Million Visa Applications Together

Spain and Italy are two countries that continuously remain among the highest-interest Schengen visa applicants worldwide. In 2023, Spain received applications from Morocco—189,126, China—148,533, Algeria—127,534, Russia—116,384, and India—91,863. In total, Spain received 1,413,222.

 

Italy was fourth in the list of the top five Schengen countries and received 1,108,035 visas in 2023. The top five countries from which Italy received applications are China—143,648, Russia—143,517, Türkiye —125,428, India—52,332, and Saudi Arabia—41,113.

 

The Netherlands Becomes Part of the Top 5 Countries

For the first time in years, the Netherlands has joined the top five countries. The Dutch visa centers worldwide received 669,291 applications in 2023, with 93,870 of them filed in Türkiye. Another 83,556 were filed in India, while in Indonesia, the Dutch authorities marked 52,276. The top five are China and the Philippines, with 50,983 and 45,224, respectively.
