According to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, India sent more than 202,000 students to the U.S. in 2018/19. This report was published recently on November 18, 2019.

 

Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange provides comprehensive information both on international students studying in the U.S. as well as U.S. students studying overseas. The report is published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.

 

As per the report, there were more than 1 million international students in the U.S. in the 2018/19 academic year.

 

In 2018/19, the total number of international students in the U.S. stood at 1,095,299. This included Optional Practical Training (OPT) along with academic programs.

China, for the tenth successive year, remained the largest source of overseas students in the US. In the academic year 2018/19, China sent 369,548 students to the US.

 

Around 52% of the total international students in the US in 2018/19 belonged to China and India.

As per the data from the US Department of Commerce, international students contributed around USD 44.7 billion to the economy of the US in 2018.

 

What do international students study in the US?

According to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, about 51.6% of international students in the US took up STEM [that is, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math] fields in the US in the academic year of 2018/19.

 

Math and Computer Science, registering an increase in overseas students' enrolments by 9.4%, overtook Business and Management to become the second-largest field of study for overseas-born students.

 

Getting 21.1% of all international students coming to the US for study overseas, Engineering remained the largest academic field for overseas students in 2018/19.
