1/3rd of the global immigrants are returning home as per the latest report by the University of Washington’s Researchers. It also offers some new revelations – there are minimum 75% more global immigrants than thought previously. Around 1/3rd of these are also returning home.
The findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. These are based on an alternate method for determining the number of global immigrants. It is inclusive of individuals departing their nations in line with the conventional statistics. The numbers of those returning home are also counted, as quoted by the QZ.
The latest data offers an extra nuanced view of immigration flows. It also reflects on the required policies to handle it. The researchers examined the flows of immigration over the 5 year periods after 1990. They used estimates offered by the UN along with other sources. The proportion of global immigrants has remained roughly similar throughout the period. This is around 1.13% and 1.29% of the population of the world, add the researchers.
The latest report also reveals that conventional methods have largely undermined the numbers of immigrants globally. The traditional estimates place global immigration at 46 million for every 5 years during 1990 and 2015. The numbers are actually around 67 to 97 million says the new report based on the time period.
The alternative approach of the researchers reveals the back-and-forth movement of the immigrants that are normally not officially recorded.
A large number of incoming migrants are offset by those returning to their nations of origin says the new study. Below are the biggest flows of home heading immigrants from 2010 to 2015:
Origin | Destination | New method (1,000s) |
United States | Mexico | 1,309 |
United Arab Emirates | India | 380 |
Ukraine | Russia | 358 |
India | Bangladesh | 350 |
