Below are the types of employment that are available in the country:
Permanent or fixed-term employment
A full-time employer is supposed to work for fixed wages or a salary under an employment agreement. This includes workers in triangular employment relationships (if someone is employed by one organization, but another controls their day-to-day work). A full-time employer usually means working 40 hours a week, but it could also mean working between 30 and 40 hours.
Part-time employment
A part-time worker or contractor is supposed to work under a term of contract of services. Part-time work means a person works a set number of hours each week, ranging from a few to around 30 hours.
Casual employment
Casual employers are usually hired for off-business needs or on-going, irregular work. Casual employment in New Zealand is characterized by a flexible nature where the employees work irregular hours on an as-needed basis. Each time, the employee accepts an offer to work irregular hours as needed.
Contractor or Freelance Employment
Freelancers and contractors are self-employed workers who work according to their terms. They can have more than one client at a time. Contractors can be self-employed, work through any company, or build their own business. They can work either part-time or full-time or for a fixed time.
Seasonal Employment
Seasonal work is limited by the season and can only be carried out at a specific time. These jobs can be found in various industries, including farms, forests, and tourist areas. Seasonal workers must relocate to the country for employment purposes.
Portfolio Employment
Portfolio Employment refers to working for different employers in two or more part-time roles. This can include freelancing or contractual work. If an employer works for two or more companies, it can add up to full-time work. These jobs could be in entirely different fields.
