GRE Coaching Tips

A standardized test conducted by Educational Testing Services (ETS), GRE scores are required for admission to various professional and graduate schools, including law and business.

Your preparation style will depend a lot on the two main factors of –

  • The total time that you have for preparation, and
  • Your personal preference and inclination for ways and means to prepare.

The bottom line here is that you should be fully aware as to what exactly to expect from the test.

GRE General has three sections –

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Quantitative reasoning
  • Analytical writing

Test-taking strategies for GRE General Test

Here we shall be looking at certain tips and strategies for the GRE General Test, computer delivered.

For Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning

  • Understand as to the kind of response needed, that is, are you required to enter a numeric answer or select one option from a multiple-choice question.
  • Make use of the on-screen calculator in the Quantitative Reasoning section.
  • Answer every question. There is no negative marking.
  • Try to answer all questions as promptly as you can.
  • Do not be careless.
  • Do not be over-confident.
  • Skip questions that you are not sure of. The “Mark and Review” feature lets you mark a question and come back to it later.
  • You can check the testing software for the list of complete questions in the section. You can see whether you have answered all questions or not. It also lets you see which questions have been marked by you for reviewing later.
  • Keep in mind to not spend far too much time on the Review screen. The screen is for helping you keep track of your progress. Spending too much time here will lead to your having lesser time to read and answer the questions.
  • All questions carry equal weightage.
  • Do not waste time by getting stuck at any question. Simply mark it and come back to it later.

The best strategy for the Verbal Reasoning as well as Quantitative Reasoning sections would be to begin by reading every question carefully. Then, answer each question, making sure that you do not linger on any question that you are not clear about. Simply mark and move on. Once you are done, you can go back and answer those questions that were marked by you earlier. Make sure that you answer all questions. As there is no negative marking, it is best to answer everything.

For Analytical Writing

  • Plan and budget your time.
  • Each task has a 30-minute time limit.
  • Allow enough time for contemplating the issue posed to you, planning your response, and composing your essay.
  • Be careful with your spelling.
  • Be careful with your grammar.
  • Don’t make typographical errors in haste.
  • Keep some time apart at the end of each of the tasks for checking for errors.

Despite the time constraints, try to provide the best sample of your writing in the limited time provided for each of the tasks under the Analytical Writing section.

Probably the best strategy to adopt for getting a good score in GRE General Test is to try and understand the GRE General test inside out. Read up as much as you can. Take simulated Mock Tests so that you can gain insight into your level of preparedness before appearing for the actual GRE General Test.

All the best.
