To apply for a UK work visa from India, you first need to secure a job offer from a UK employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence. Most Indian professionals apply for the Skilled Worker visa. Your employer assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which you use to apply online. You then give your biometrics at a VFS Global UK visa application centre in India. The job must usually pay at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the role, whichever is higher. You must also prove your English at B2 level. The visa fee starts at £819 for up to three years, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year. Most decisions are made within three weeks, and your visa is issued as a digital eVisa that confirms your right to live and work in the UK.

Most UK work visas, including the Skilled Worker visa, need a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor. However, a few routes do not need a job offer. The High Potential Individual visa suits graduates of top global universities. The Global Talent visa suits leaders in fields such as research and digital technology. The India Young Professionals Scheme lets Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 live and work in the UK for up to two years.
Most Skilled Worker visa applications from outside the UK receive a decision within three weeks of giving biometrics. Processing can take longer if more checks are needed or your documents are incomplete. Some VFS Global centres in India offer priority and super priority services for an extra fee. These can shorten the decision time to a few working days.
The Health and Care Worker visa is a type of Skilled Worker visa for eligible roles in health and adult social care. It has lower visa fees, starting at £324. Applicants are also exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge. The standard Skilled Worker visa covers a wider range of occupations and costs from £819. Both routes need a job offer and a Certificate of Sponsorship.
Yes. Most Skilled Worker visa applicants must be paid at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for their occupation, whichever is higher. Lower thresholds apply to some applicants, such as new entrants to the labour market and certain PhD holders. Some health and education roles follow national pay scales instead. Always check the current salary rules for your occupation code on GOV.UK.
Yes. New Skilled Worker visa applicants must prove English at CEFR level B2 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You can do this by passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI. You can also use a degree that was taught in English, if it is confirmed by Ecctis. Indian nationals are not exempt from the English requirement.
Yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can usually apply as your dependants. Each dependant pays their own visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Your partner can generally work in the UK without needing a separate sponsor. However, care workers and senior care workers on the Health and Care Worker visa cannot bring dependants.
Yes. If you live in India and are applying to come to the UK for more than six months, you need a TB test. The test must be taken at a clinic approved by the Home Office. The TB certificate is valid for six months from the date of your chest X-ray. You must include the certificate with your visa application.
Yes, but you must make a new visa application first. Your new employer must hold a sponsor licence and assign you a new Certificate of Sponsorship. You must apply to update your visa before you start the new job. You can keep working for your current employer while the new application is being processed.
If your application is refused, the decision letter explains the reason. Common reasons include missing documents, an ineligible job, or a salary below the required threshold. You may be able to request an administrative review if you believe a mistake was made. You can also reapply once you have resolved the issue. The visa fee is usually not refunded after a refusal, but the Immigration Health Surcharge is.
Yes. Skilled Worker visa holders can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the UK's form of permanent residency. Under the current rules, you can usually apply after five years of qualifying residence. You must also meet the salary, English language, and Life in the UK test requirements. The UK is reforming its settlement rules, so check the latest GOV.UK guidance before you apply.
