To apply for an Iceland work visa from India, you first need a job offer from an employer in Iceland. Iceland's work visa is a residence permit based on work, linked to a work permit for a specific job and employer. Most skilled Indian professionals apply for the residence permit for work requiring expert knowledge. This route needs a university, technical, or art qualification, or comparable work experience. Your employer submits the work permit application, and you submit the residence permit application to the Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun), which now decides both. After approval, you receive an entry visa, travel to Iceland, and complete a photo appointment and a medical check, if required, to receive your residence permit card. Iceland is not part of the EU, so the EU Blue Card does not apply.

Every Iceland work permit route needs a job offer from an employer in Iceland before you apply.
The steps to apply for an Iceland work visa for Indians are as follows:
Step 1: Choose the most suitable work permit route for your job, such as the residence permit for work requiring expert knowledge or the residence permit due to a shortage of labour.
Step 2: Secure a job offer and a signed employment contract from an employer in Iceland. The salary and terms must meet the Icelandic collective agreement for your job.
Step 3: Ask your employer to prepare the work permit application, explaining why your skills are needed. For shortage roles, the employer must show that no suitable worker was found in Iceland or the EEA.
Step 4: Prepare your documents, including your passport, photograph, police clearance certificate, health insurance certificate, degree certificates, and experience letters.
Step 5: Pay the processing fee of ISK 80,000 by bank transfer and send your residence permit application, with the payment receipt, to the Directorate of Immigration together with the work permit application.
Step 6: Wait for the decision. The Directorate of Immigration reviews both your residence permit and your work permit. You must not start working until both are granted.
Step 7: Once approved, the Directorate of Immigration requests your entry visa from the relevant embassy. Collect the visa and travel to Iceland.
Step 8: After arrival, attend a photo appointment, submit your notification of residence, and complete a medical examination within two weeks, if required. You will then receive your residence permit card and Icelandic ID number (kennitala).

No, in most cases. Every Iceland work-based residence permit needs a job offer and a work permit for a specific job with a specific employer. Iceland does not offer a job seeker visa. However, graduates of Icelandic universities can renew their student permit for up to 18 months to look for work. Doctoral graduates of Icelandic universities can also get a 12-month specialist permit to find a job.
Processing time depends on the number of applications and how complete your documents are. It often takes several weeks to a few months. Iceland has removed the paid fast-track service for work-based permits, so all applications follow standard processing. Missing documents, such as an untranslated police certificate, can cause delays. Start the process at least three to four months before your planned start date.
This permit is for professionals with a university, technical, or art qualification, or comparable work experience, whose job in Iceland needs that knowledge. It is linked to a work permit for a specific job and employer. It is the main route for most skilled Indian professionals. The permit can be renewed and can count towards permanent residence in Iceland.
Iceland does not set one fixed minimum salary for all work permits. Instead, your salary and working terms must meet the Icelandic collective agreement for your job. Your income must also cover the minimum means of support set by the Directorate of Immigration. The authorities may ask the relevant trade union to review your employment terms before the work permit is granted.
No. Icelandic is not required for a work-based residence permit. Many roles in IT, engineering, tourism, healthcare, and research use English at work. However, learning Icelandic helps with daily life and integration. To apply for permanent residence later, you usually need to complete an approved Icelandic language course or pass a language test.
Yes. Your spouse or cohabiting partner and children under 18 can apply for a residence permit based on family reunification. The fee is ISK 110,000 for a spouse and ISK 60,000 for each child. You must show that you can support your family during the stay. Family members apply to the Directorate of Immigration with their own documents, including police certificates and health insurance.
The Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun) handles both residence permits and work permits for foreign nationals. Work permits were previously processed by the Directorate of Labour, but this responsibility moved to the Directorate of Immigration under recent changes to Iceland's laws. Your employer submits the work permit application, and you submit the residence permit application with the required documents.
Your work permit is linked to a specific job and employer. If you want to change jobs, your new employer must apply for a new work permit before you start working for them. For the expert knowledge route, the authorities check whether your skills meet the requirements of the new job. You must not start the new job until the new permit is granted.
If your application is refused, you will receive a written decision with the reasons. Common reasons include missing documents, an untranslated police certificate, invalid health insurance, or a job that does not meet the expert knowledge criteria. You can appeal to the Immigration and Asylum Appeals Board, usually within 15 days of receiving the decision. The processing fee is not refunded.
Yes, on most routes. Holders of a residence permit for work requiring expert knowledge can usually apply for permanent residence after four years of continuous residence in Iceland. You must meet the permit conditions throughout and complete an approved Icelandic language course or test. Permits based on a shortage of labour generally do not count towards permanent residence. The application fee is ISK 60,000.
