How many points do you need to migrate to Australia?

Under the Australian points system, you need at least 65 points to migrate to Australia and qualify for Australia PR. However, scoring above 65 increases your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
 

The Australian points system is merit-based, awarding points based on eligibility criteria for an Australian visa. Factors such as age, educational qualifications, skills, and language proficiency are considered when determining your score.

Factors that determine your points for Australia Migration

Age

Age is an important factor in deciding to migrate to Australia since most visas have an age limit of 45. Different age groups under 45 are awarded different points. Individuals belonging to the age group 25-32 receive the maximum points.
 

The table below lists the different age groups and the corresponding points allotted:

English Language Proficiency

The Australian Government allows applicants to take English proficiency tests such as IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, etc.  A score of 8 in IELTS can get you a maximum of 20 points.
 

Work Experience

Skilled employment is another important factor when deciding your score. Skilled employment in Australia with a work experience of 8 years in the last 10 years can get you a maximum of 20 points, while skilled employment outside Australia with a work experience of 8 years in the previous 10 years can get you a maximum of 15 points.

Points Allotted for Work Experience in Australia

Educational Qualification

Maximum points are awarded to applicants with a doctoral degree from any Australian university or university outside Australia recognized by the Australian Government. A maximum of 20 points if the doctoral degree is from Australia or outside Australia and a maximum of 15 points if the bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree is from Australia or outside Australia.
 

Other factors

  • Contribution of spouse: if your spouse or partner is included in the visa application, you can get additional points based on their Age, nominal occupation, and language proficiency.
  • Regional Study: any degree or diploma qualification while in Australia can get you additional points if the duration of Study is at least 2 years
  • Community language skills: additional points are awarded if the applicant knows any of the Australian-designated languages
  • Nominated by state or territorial Government: Since the government sponsors applicants under the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489), points are awarded to them.
