Canada and New Zealand are attracting Indian students by dint of their new immigration policies. Read on to know how.

Canada:

Canada has reduced the processing time for Student Visas from 60 days to 45 days. This pretty much shows how keen the Canadian Govt. is to have Indian students on board.

The major intake months in Canada are September and January.

Why are Indian students choosing Canada?

  1. A high rate of employment
  2. Canada has a wide choice of institutions. Students may choose from 96 colleges and Universities in the country.
  3. Multi-cultural environment
  4. Faster visa processing

Canada had 494,525 overseas students in 2017 as per the Canadian Bureau for International Education. As per The Hindu, Canada’s International Education Strategy had a target of 450,000 international students by 2022. Yet, the country has managed to hit the target 5 years ahead of schedule.

China comprises the most number of international students at 28%. India follows with 25% and South Korea has 5% international students in Canada.

Canada is slowly and steadily introducing visa reforms to attract more Indian students. Faster visa processing times are available under the ‘Student Direct Stream’ program. The SDS program is available to students opting for courses like Business, Health and Social Sciences, and Computing. Overseas students become eligible for a three-year work permit after completion of their program.

New Zealand:

New Zealand offers 3-year post-study work permit for students pursuing courses under Level 7 or above. It has also discontinued the employer-assisted post-study work visas at all levels.

The major intake months in New Zealand are July and February.

Why are Indian students choosing New Zealand?

  1. Post-study work visa
  2. Extra incentives for studying in select areas of New Zealand
  3. Top-rated Universities and programs

New Zealand wants more overseas students to come to the country. Business is the most popular course chosen followed by IT and Engineering.

With effect from November 26, New Zealand will try and introduce more post-study pathways for overseas students. The pathways would be purposeful and contribute the qualifications and skills needed by New Zealand.
