How can I get Canada PR with family?

Individuals above 18 years of age with a Canada PR can sponsor their partners, children, parents, and grandparents to move to Canada as permanent residents. The individuals must be able to financially support the sponsored person.

What are the different types of family sponsorships?

There are different types of sponsorships to sponsor family members, and they include:

Spouse, Common-law, or Conjugal Partner

Individuals can sponsor their legal spouse or partner for a Canadian permanent residency. Canada PR holders can apply for a spousal open work permit to work in Canada to reduce financial burdens. Individuals living together for a minimum of a year are also eligible for a spousal sponsorship.

Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship

Canada PR holders or Canadian citizens willing to sponsor parents or grandparents must prove their financial capability to support the members of the family by fulfilling the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the family unit. Sponsors unable to support their parents or grandparents permanently are eligible for a Super Visa.

Child or Other Dependant Sponsorship

Under this child sponsorship program, the Canada PRs or Canadian citizens can sponsor their adopted or biological children less than 22 years old for PR. This is possible if they are unmarried and do not have any children. An individual over 22 years old with a physical or mental condition will be considered a dependent if they cannot support themselves.

Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild

  • They are unmarried
  • They are under the age of 18
  • They are related by adoption or by blood

Other relatives (under exceptional circumstances as a “Lonely Canadian”)

Canadian PRs or Canadian citizens can sponsor an extended relative. This is possible only if the sponsors are considered as a “Lonely Canadian” and have no partner, parents, child, or grandparents.
