Implemented by former American President, Barack Obama, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) granted undocumented immigrants temporary legal status to those who arrived in the United States as children, provided they were working or enrolled in school.
But with Donald Trump’s decision to end DACA, it is incumbent on Congress to come up with a policy solution so that around 800,000 Dreamers currently enrolled in DACA can continue to live legally in the US, says Lexington Herald-Leader.
A letter signed recently by close to 1,500 economists, whose aim was to protect them, stated the advantages that the US economy has been enjoying because of these immigrants.
They are younger workers who can fill the gaps created by the retirement of the Baby Boomers, increase the productivity of American Workforce and increase the number of people employed in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) areas that are crucial for improving the productivity of the US.
These benefits are crucial and far surpass the costs America bears for housing them. In addition, people who are beneficiaries of DACA were hardly convicted of any crimes of significance.
The US higher education system is arguably one of the best globally, and this stature is based on the ability of American educational institutions to recruit high-quality teaching faculty members and attract the brightest of students in the world.
This newspaper adds that private sector of the world’s largest economy is flourishing because of immigrants. For instance, founder of over two out of five Fortune 500 companies such as Google, Apple, McDonald’s and many others were immigrants or their offspring.
Even immigrants entering the US for work or study on a temporary basis pay taxes, though they are not eligible to avail all government benefits.
It is said that refugees have also been paying $21,000 more in taxes than they get in benefits, on an average, during their initial stay of 20 years in this country.
With the Baby Boomers on the verge of retirement, the number of workers to fill the gaps left by them is reducing. This is where young immigrants can come to America’s rescue.
Moreover, many immigrants are being recruited in industries in seasonal occupations such as agriculture and construction. It is said to be hard to find many US-born who are willing to work in these aforementioned occupations.
They are said to be more mobile as well compared to Americans and show little hesitation in relocating to places with more employment opportunities.
This aspect of flexibility is also helping in bolstering the US economy’s productivity.
An education system with a strong platform that equips all Workers in America with skills in demand across industries and the capability to adjust to future economic changes, combined with opportunities for reskilling current workers, would allow all Americans to profit from a prospering economy.
Much ado is being made out of American security as most of these Dreamers are least likely to commit heinous crimes.
In effect, the upshot is that any reforms to immigration must take a nuanced approach to allow immigrants to improve the economy of the US.
