Can I bring my family to Canada on a work permit?

Foreign nationals who are Canadian work permit holders can bring their family with them. The application for the work visa does not automatically include their family members. Instead, they must apply for a work permit or temporary residency visa.

Pathways to bring your family members to Canada

There are three pathways through which they can bring their family on work permit:

Canada Spousal Open Work Permit:

The applicant who found a job through a Canadian employer and has been approved for a work permit in the suitable NOC category, the spouses are eligible to apply for a spousal open work permit. A spousal open work permit allows spouses to explore their options and get hired by a Canadian employer once they have arrived in Canada. The employer will support their spouse and any dependent children upon arrival in the country, or at least until they can find a job.

Canada Tourist Visa for Family members:

Family members or spouses can apply for a tourist visa if they do not want to work while they are in Canada. A tourist visa will not allow the family member to apply for a work permit or study in Canada. However, if a spouse is applying for a tourist visa, they can stay in Canada until the work permit expires. If the work permit is renewed, they can also stay and be financially supported by the sponsor.

Canada Study permits for Children:

Any child under 18 accompanying the sponsor can apply for an Open work permit that will allow them to study at Canada’s elementary school and secondary educational institution without proof of acceptance from the Canadian school before applying. However, suppose the family members want to study at any post-secondary institution in Canada. In that case, they must apply for the program and receive a letter of acceptance from the educational institution. After that, they can apply for a Canadian study permit.

Other pathways to bring your family members

There is one more way to bring family to Canada if the applicant is financially stable enough to support the family members, such as:

Dependant visa

If the employer is settled in Canada with a work permit holder, they can bring their family to Canada to live. The Canada Dependant visa allows the family member to enter Canada to work or study full-time once they have relevant permits. The Dependant visa, allows to bring:

  • Spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner
  • Children under the age of 21
  • Parents or grandparents
  • A child you adopted outside Canada while you held Canadian citizenship or PR
  • Your brother, sister, niece, nephew, uncle, aunt, or other close relatives
