Are international students allowed to work in Austria?

International students can work while studying abroad in Austria. The number of hours they can work depends on the visa or permits. International students can work in Austria during their studies if they have a Student Residence Permit. If the student has an innovative idea for a company, they can establish a firm during their studies. If they want to work as an employed person during their studies, the company has to apply for a work permit before they are permitted to begin work.

*Note: The studies must always be the top priority during the course.

Ways to reside and work in Austria after graduation

After the student has completed their degree, they can apply for a residency permit that will allow them to stay in the country for 1year. Austria doesn’t have a post-graduation visa. Instead, they provide a residency permit to look for employment or start a business in the country.

Types of Residency permit in Austria

There are two types of residency permit an International student can apply for:

  • Resident Permit for Students: This permit is issued to a student who wants to study and work in Austria. The permit is valid for up to 1 year. If the individual has not applied for a particular work visa before applying for the Red-White-Red Card, they won’t be allowed to work.
  • Resident Permit for Researcher: This permit is issued to nationals who plan to reside in Austria as per the residence agreement with a research center. The holder of this permit needs to be registered as a resident for research purposes.

Requirements to apply for Residency Permit

Here are the requirements to apply for a Residency Permit:

  • Must conclude a contract with the employer
  • After receiving a job offer, whether the visa is valid or not, it must be changed to a Red-White-Red Card
  • Valid passport
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of funds
  • Application form
  • Proof of accommodation in the country

Austria Permits or Visas after graduation

There is one type of visa or permit that is issued to post-graduate students to work in Austria:

Red-White-Red Card for Graduates: International students can continue residing in Austria after studying with an Austria residence permit. Within this period, if the graduate is able to get employed and can obtain employment from a specified employer (work contract) that matches the qualification level of the student, then they can apply for Red-White-Red Card. The Red-White-Red Card for Graduates doesn’t require the student to take a labor market test. The student needs to meet the basic requirements for the red-white card for graduates.

Requirements to apply for Red-White-Red Card

Here are the requirements to apply for Red-White-Red Card:

  • The minimum salary should be the same as Austrian graduates
  • Fill out the application form
  • Valid passport
  • Education Qualification
  • Employment details
  • Police Clearance certificate
  • Language proficiency in German and English
  • Work experience(if any)
