The University of California Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley, referred to also as UC Berkeley or Berkeley, is a public research university located in Berkeley, California. Founded as the University of California in 1868, it is the first campus of the University of California system. 

It has fourteen colleges and schools that offer more than 350 degree programs. It has more than 31,800 undergraduate and over 13,200 graduate students. Berkeley is rated among the top universities in the world. 

The schools and colleges in turn are divided into 180 departments and 80 interdisciplinary units. While colleges cater to both undergraduate and graduate students, schools are mostly for graduates.

Berkeley is home to 32 libraries that comprise more than 13 million volumes and are spread over 12 acres of land, making it one of the world’s largest library complexes.

The MBA offered at Berkeley Haas, also known as the Walter A. Haas School of Business, is an on-campus, full-time two-year program. This program has an extensive general management syllabus that intends to equip students with the skills and knowledge to be leaders wherever they go.

Apart from the regular MBA program, students are also allowed to apply for one of the following two concurrent degrees:

  • MBA/MPH (Masters of Public Health) degree
  • MBA/MEng (Business Administration and Engineering) degree
  • the JD/MBA degree.

Students need to complete 51 units of coursework in order to graduate. They can complete up to 12 to 14 units per semester. But the maximum number of MBA units a student can complete per semester is 16. 

Classes are taken from Monday through Thursday for students, and on Fridays, they have career services workshops, discussion sessions, and other activities, including extracurricular events. There will be fewer than 300 students enrolled per class, making it easier for the university to offer bespoke career services.

Students need to, however, complete 12 courses in the core curriculum to improve their expertise in the analytical tools and knowledge needed to lead effectively. Students get the benefit of learning from faculty members renowned globally for their research and motivators.

Berkeley Haas offers MBA scholarships that are both need-based and merit-based. All potential students will be assessed for fellowships and funding of scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Students need to have completed a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent from an institution recognized by the university.
  • Graduates from outside the US who have graduated from renowned educational institutions need to have completed at least 16 years of education, with a minimum of 12 years together at the primary and secondary levels.
  • Students need to have got an average GPA of 3.6 out of 4.0.
  • They should submit their GRE or GMAT scores mandatorily for this program. There is, however, no minimum adequate score.
Proficiency in the English Language:
  • All students hailing from countries where the native language is not English need to submit proof of their proficiency in the English language. Countries included in this list are South Asia, the Middle East, the People’s Republic of China, Latin America, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, Quebec (Canada), and most European countries.
Eligibility for Indian Students:
  • Students with at least a four-year or three-year bachelor’s degree from an Indian educational institution are considered for admission. 

As reiterated above, besides minimum eligibility criteria, foreign students hailing from countries where English is not the native language must prove their proficiency in English through their scores in IELTS, TOEFL, or other equivalent tests to gain admission to the MBA program.

University of California Berkeley Ranking

As per Times Higher Education (THE), the university was ranked #8 in business out of 1200 in the Global Ranking. Financial Times ranked it #14 in business.

Visa

Students wanting to study at the University of California, Berkeley, need F or J visas.

Dependent Status: Students holding a dependent status are those who stay in the US with parents or their spouses, and their immigration status depends on the relationship with the primary visa holders. Its validity stays until the age of 21. Students holding a dependent status and who would turn 21 in the period of the six months to a year will have to change their status. 

Independent Status: Students holding their own independent non-immigrant status like A-1 Diplomat, I-1 Journalist, H-1B Temporary Worker, and L-1 Intra-company Transferee

If students are ending the activity of their status (employment or other duties), they need to change their status to F-1 or J-1 to remain staying legally in the US to attend the program. The process to obtain an F-1 or J-1 entry visa is:

  • Get I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) from Berkeley by completing their (Nonimmigrant Information Form) NIF.
  • They have to confirm the existing wait times for visa appointments and its grant in their country.
  • Pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Fee, if relevant.
  • Fill out the Visa Application Form DS-160.
  • Schedule a visa appointment and attend an interview at an embassy or consulate of the United States.
Work Study

The Work-Study Program allows students to seek part-time employment while they are studying. With this program, students can go to work with program flexibility so that they can maintain balance between study commitments and their work responsibilities.

  • Students with an F-1 status holding an I-20 from UC Berkeley Extension are authorized to work on the campus of the UC Berkeley for up to 20 hours a week when the school is in session and full-time during vacations.
  • At a time, students can be part of only one work-study job.
  • They can earn minimum wages of $20 per hour or more.
  • F-1 students who have been issued I-20s by the UC Berkeley may work on-campus without any extra approval when they are fully enrolled with legal I-20s.
  • J-1 students need to get a written approval from their program sponsor before they commence any type of on-campus job.
