Who Can Be Included as a Dependant?

Documents from the Dependant
- Valid Indian passport with at least 6 months' validity beyond the planned stay
- Recent passport-size photographs (as per UK Visas and Immigration – UKVI – requirements)
- Proof of relationship:
- Marriage certificate (for spouse or civil partner)
- Civil partnership certificate (for civil partner)
- Proof of 2 years of living together (for unmarried partner) – bank statements, utility bills, joint lease
- Birth certificate (for children)
- Proof of funds – £845 per month (London) or £680 per month (outside London), held for at least 28 consecutive days
- Bank statement showing the required funds, with the closing balance within 31 days of the application date
- Immigration Health Surcharge payment receipt
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate (for applicants from India – TB test at an approved clinic)

How to Apply for the UK PhD Student Dependent Visa?
The application is done fully online. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Make sure you are on an eligible PhD or research-based course at RQF Level 8. Check that the course started on or after 1 January 2024. Confirm your dependant qualifies under the visa rules.
Step 2: Gather All Documents
Collect all documents from both the main student and the dependant. Get the marriage certificate, birth certificate, or proof of relationship apostilled if needed. Make sure bank statements show the correct amount for at least 28 days.
Step 3: Pay the Visa Fee and Health Surcharge
Pay £524 as the visa application fee for each dependant. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) at £776 per year per person for the length of the visa.
Step 4: Apply Online
Go to the official UK Visas and Immigration online portal. Select the correct form:
- "Apply as a partner outside the UK" or "Apply as a child outside the UK" – if your family is in India
- "Apply as a partner inside the UK" or "Apply as a child inside the UK" – if your family is already in the UK
Your family will need your application number – called a Global Web Form (GWF) or Unique Application Number (UAN) – which you received when you applied for your student visa.
Step 5: Prove Identity
Your family must prove their identity. They will either:
- Use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan their identity document and create or sign in to a UKVI account
- Visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India to give fingerprints and a photo (biometric information)
Step 6: Attend Visa Application Centre (VAC)
Book an appointment at the nearest UK Visa Application Centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, or Pune). Submit original documents and complete biometrics.
Step 7: Wait for a Decision
The standard processing time is about 3 weeks after biometrics. Priority service is 5 working days. Super priority service is 24 hours (subject to availability).
Step 8: Travel to the UK
After approval, the dependant will receive an eVisa. They set up or sign in to a UKVI account to access it. They can then travel to the UK and join you.
Important: If your dependant is applying inside the UK, they must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man until they get a decision. Their application will be withdrawn if they do.

PR Pathway for UK PhD Student Dependants
Coming to the UK on a student dependent visa is not the end of the journey. There is a clear path to long-term residence and Permanent Residency (PR) in the UK.
Step 1: PhD Student Dependent Visa Your family lives in the UK while you complete your PhD. Your spouse can work full time.
Step 2: Graduate Visa After completing your PhD, you can apply for the Graduate visa. PhD graduates get 3 years of stay on the Graduate visa. Your dependants can also extend or switch to a Graduate Dependant visa at the same time.
Step 3: Skilled Worker Visa After the Graduate visa, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa if you get a job offer from a UK employer. Your spouse and children can come with you as dependants on the Skilled Worker route.
Step 4: Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) – Permanent Residency After 5 years of legal stay in the UK on a qualifying visa (such as the Skilled Worker visa), you and your family can apply for ILR. ILR is permanent residence in the UK.
Step 5: British Citizenship After holding ILR for at least 1 year, and meeting the citizenship requirements, you and your family can apply for British citizenship. A British passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries.
Note: Time spent on the Student visa and Graduate visa does not directly count toward the 5-year ILR qualifying period. The clock for ILR starts when you switch to a qualifying route such as the Skilled Worker visa.
