University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland

Established in 1898, the University of St. Gallen (HSG) is a research university that primarily specializes in business administration, computer sciences, economics, international affairs, and law.

Located on Rosenberg Hill, it overlooks the Altstadt of St. Gallen, giving a view of the Alpstein mountain range. HSG, which is owned by the canton of St. Gallen, is associated with the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), the Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). In 1939, the university became eligible to award doctoral degrees.

The university houses five schools: Law School, School of Economics and political Science, School of Finance, School of Humanities & Social Science, and School of Management.

Apart from that, the University of St. Gallen has 29 affiliated research institutions, where most of its junior research staff are trained, enabling them to understand the professional world and be in a position to initiate offshoot companies.

HSG houses a campus that is home to a renowned learning environment for students. Close to it, there are several cafés, restaurants, chemist shops, and general stores, among others.

Located in the German-speaking region of Switzerland, it ranks 436 worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2024.

It houses close to 9,600 students, of whom about 2,300 are foreign nationals.

The HSG is renowned for offering a wide-ranging curriculum. Its students also need to attend classes in subjects including business ethics, sociology, psychology, and history, among others, so that they get to think critically. It also equips them with the skills to handle other challenges that they could face in their careers and lives.

The University of St.Gallen’s Career & Corporate Services (CSC) comprises coaches and career counselors who have a broad knowledge of several disciplines and industries.

Its aim is to extend support to students in planning their careers. It also helps them professionally draft application requirements, train them for interviews, and help them make decisions.

The tuition fees for international students at the University of St. Gallen are €3,250 per semester for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs and €1,120 per semester for doctoral students.

HSG’s 15 schools offer MS programs, with German and English being the mediums of instruction.

The notable alumni of HSG include Peter Fankhauser, the CEO of Thomas Cook Group, Nick Hayek, the CEO of Swatch Group, and Martti Ahtisaari (Former President of Finland), among others.
