Western University Ontario

The University Of Western Ontario (UWO), referred to as Western University, or Western is a public research university located in London in Ontario province, Canada. The main campus is spread over 455 hectares of plot, surrounded by residential neighborhoods. 

The university was founded in March 1878 as The Western University of London, Ontario. In 2012, the university was named “Western University” to give it a global identity.

The university houses twelve academic faculties and schools, including the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, besides professional programs in business, engineering, law, and medicine.

Western University is ranked number 10 in Best Global Universities in Canada by the US News and World Report. Its first-year admission rates of students are 91 %, which is one of the highest in Canada.

Enrolled in Western University are 41,940 students, of which 25,991 are undergraduates, 3,869 are graduates, and 2,231 PhD students. It has more than 4,490 international students belonging to more than 129 countries. 

International students wanting to gain admission at Western University need to obtain a GPA of at least 2.7, which is equivalent to 82% for students from India in their qualifying exams. 

But the average GPA of students admitted to the university is 3.3, which is equivalent to 88%.

Rankings of the Western University

In QS World University Rankings 2023, it is ranked number #172. As per Maclean’s Rankings 2021, it is ranked #8th best university in Canada. As per QS Subject Ranking 2022, Western University’s highest ranked subject is Library & Information Management at #23. 

The campus of the Western University

Western University has an expansive campus with both Gothic and contemporary-styled buildings. In place on the campus are a student emergency response team, police services, and fire safety for ensuring the safety, and security of students. 

The library within the campus has 5.7 million books. Also on the campus are two art galleries and a museum of archeology. It also provides diverse opportunities for the overall development of students like art & culture, athletics, health & wellness, sports club, transportation, etc. In a nutshell, it is a friendly campus for students.

The University is affiliated with the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada (AUCC), the International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Canadian Bureau for International Education CBIE, among others. The University also provides support to students with coaching in the English language.

  • Offered in the 12 faculties of the university are graduate and postdoctoral programs and professional programs in business, engineering, law, and medicine.

  • The National Scholarship program- recognizes the overall excellence of students in academics and extracurricular activities. As per this scholarship, the President’s Entrance scholarship is for foreign students with scholarships ranging from CAD50,000 to CAD70,000.
  • Western University partners with one of the renowned scholarship programs, specifically the Schulich Leader scholarship. It is meant for students who wish to accomplish more in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students pursuing an engineering degree will be given a benefit of CAD100,000 and students pursuing science, technology, and mathematics degree are given a benefit of CAD80,000.
  • Bursaries- Students are given non-repayable grants on a financial basis. One type is admission Bursaries and the others are in-course Bursaries.
