Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) has students from close to 60 countries studying in it. In addition, foreign nationals constitute 60 percent of the student body of TUJ, the majority of who are from the United States and Europe.
On the other hand, foreign students who want to land jobs in Japan after they graduate is rising every year. The problem, however, is that the proficiency in Japanese that companies require from them is deterring them from doing so. The ‘Japan Revitalization Strategy’ announced in 2016 that it would increase the employment levels of foreign graduates in Japan to 50 percent by 2020, up from the existing 30 percent. To achieve this urgently, Japanese employers need to be encouraged.
To address this, TUJ is initiating three measures via the Career Development Office. They are: Sophia University – Temple University Japan joint career fair to be held entirely in English with presentations of recruiters and information sessions at booths, a new program at TUJ to develop Japanese job interview skills (Japanese Boot Camp) and long-term internships to garner valuable Japanese Work experience.
At the ‘Japanese Boot Camp’ program, Ryoko Osada, Japanese Major Advisor and Assistant Professor, was quoted by Okinawa Stripes as saying that it would help students will master expressions in Japanese, particularly to face to interviews. Osada said that it was their aim increase the foreign student numbers who can get to participate and successfully pass a 40-Minute interview in Japanese and get job offers.
Kentaro Sawa, Career Development Office Manager, said that the real worth of Japan’s university's career support is because of programs such as long-term internships whose intent is to meet the disparate needs of foreign students.
